If you’ve heard about Georgia’s 2024 Surplus Tax Refund and are wondering if you qualify or when it might arrive you’re not alone. Thanks to House Bill 112 (HB 112), eligible taxpayers could receive a refund from the state’s surplus funds. Here’s a breakdown of who qualifies, what to expect, and how to ensure you don’t miss out.

🗓️ When Will I Receive My Refund?

Refunds will begin processing once your return has been filed and approved. For most eligible taxpayers, you can expect your surplus refund to arrive within 6–8 weeks of filing provided your return is submitted by May 1, 2025.

If you’ve been granted an extension, you still have until October 15, 2025, but filing earlier may mean receiving your refund sooner.

Good news: If you’ve already filed your 2023 return and plan to file 2024 before the deadline, you don’t need to apply separately. Surplus refunds will be issued automatically to those who qualify.

    ✅ Who Is Eligible?

You may be eligible for the HB 112 Surplus Tax Refund if:

    • You file both your 2023 and 2024 Georgia Individual Income Tax Returns on time
    • You had a tax liability for the 2023 tax year
    • You are a Georgia resident, part-year resident, or nonresident who paid Georgia income taxes

This includes many types of filers, such as W-2 employees, self-employed individuals, retirees, and others with taxable income in Georgia.

💡 What Is a Surplus Tax Refund?

A surplus tax refund is a one-time return of excess state revenue. Georgia collected more revenue than expected and is redistributing a portion of those funds to taxpayers through the HB 112 legislation.

This refund is separate from your regular state income tax refund. It’s a bonus refund, so long as you meet the eligibility criteria.

🔍 How to Check Your Surplus Refund Status

To check your Surplus Tax Refund status, the Georgia Department of Revenue has created a dedicated link specifically for this refund.

👉 Use the special Surplus Refund Status Check page here:

    https://surplusrefund.dor.ga.gov

    You’ll need:

    • Tax Year (2024)
    • Your Social Security Number
    • Federal Adjusted Gross Income from line 8 on your Georgia Form 500 tax return

Note: This is different from the standard “Where’s My Refund” portal used for regular income tax refunds.

📌 Tips to Ensure a Smooth Refund Process

    • Double-check your personal information (name, SSN, address, bank info) before submitting
    • E-file your return for faster processing
    • Opt for direct deposit to receive your refund more quickly
    • Keep an eye on both your regular refund and the surplus refund status separately
